Janette Carter has passed away. Janette was the daughter of A.P. and Sara Carter of the famous Carter Family, arguably the most influential figures in American roots and country music. I had the great honor of meeting Janette and photographing her for the New York Times a few years ago (this is the photo that ran in the paper). She and her daughter, Rita Forrester, managed the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, VA, for many years. Their family tree includes Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash (June was Janette Carter's cousin) whose country home was just up the road from Janette's. She will be dearly missed.
